Common Reed - Giant Reed - Phragmites australis americanusPhragmites is a perennial (grows back each year) native warm season grass that can grow up to 10 to 12 ft tall. It provides thick dense cover for roosting or bedding as well as escape cover and winter cover. Provides excellent concealment lanes for entering and exciting properties. Is found in every state of the USA and prefers soils with good moisture or rainfall, but can grow in moderate soils as well. Can only be started with root cuttings (ryhizomes) or container stock. Simply place root cutting in a shallow hold or cut in the ground and reseal soil back around root cutting. Using a spade shovel for example, push spade into the ground, push forward to open cut, drop root cutting in shallow, remove shovel and seal dirt back around root cutting. On my property, my Phragmites stands are some of the best cover for pheasants, deer and turkey. Deer and pheasants use the cover extensively for roosting and winter cover. I also use it for concealment cover for entering and exciting my property. Only available in spring and summer as as available. Please place your orders early to allow harvest expectations. IMPORTANT - Some states have banned Common Reed or banned Phragmites australis subsp australis, which is a non-native subspecies. We only provide Phragmites australis subsp americanus, which is the native species and is not banned in many states. Please check before ordering. Thank you
